Bhutan is a Buddhist kingdom located at the eastern tip of the Himalayas and flanked by china and india.

During this long period of time the people of Bhutan have managed to maintain their culture and characteristics well. Even Bhutanese people are only allowed to marry Bhutanese people, they are not allowed to marry foreigners as a way to preserve their culture and maintain their uniqueness.

In fact, Bhutan is like a kingdom that closed itself off to maintain the traditions and culture of their ancestors intact until finally Bhutan allowed foreign tourists to enter their territory, of course, these tourists had to pay an exorbitant price, because in that way they intended to deter anyone who wanted to. erode their way of life.

 🦋 5 Unique Facts of Bhutan 🦋

1. Life without TV and Internet :

Bhutan is a very difficult country to access until in 1974 the Bhutanese government allowed foreign tourists to enter their country even in 1960 Bhutan had no roads, telephones and electricity. In the years around 1990-2000, the Bhutanese government allowed the presence of electronic devices such as TV and internet networks to enter their country, which moment coincided with the 25th birthday of the son of the king of Bhutan at that time, which of course the king also did not want Bhutanese people are blind to technology.

But even then with very strict regulations and limited access because only a few people can use it. The policy, which began to be implemented around the end of 1999, made Bhutan the last country in the world to start using TV

2. Having a Minister of Happiness:

In order to maintain the inner peace of the Bhutanese people in 2008 the Bhutan National Happiness Commission began to be formed. The population census questionnaire even has a column where you can indicate whether you are satisfied with your life or not ?

What's more, there is also a ministry of happiness that has similarities to gross domestic product where they measure the gross national product of happiness exactly the same as the gross domestic product.

Thus the quality of life is determined by their financial and mental values. Even in Bhutan there are no people who are homeless or people living on the streets, if they lose their house they just need to come to the king who then the king will give them a piece of land to build a house and cultivate crops.

3. Countries in the world that do not have traffic lights :

The capital city of Bhutan is called kotatimpu the only capital in the world that does not have traffic lights which is what happens because every time a traffic light is installed on the main roads a lot of people complain and expect to remove the traffic light, even though This does not mean that there is no regulation on the streets of the capital city of Bhutan, because there is a policeman wearing white gloves who will control traffic on the main streets of the capital and it is proven that the citizens remain orderly with the presence of the white-gloved police. not only in the capital city of Bhutan but throughout the territory of the country of Bhutan so that later Bhutan was known as the only country in the world without traffic lights.

4. Chili as the main food ingredient :

Chili has become part of everyday food where people or those residents of Bhutan really like food with a spicy taste where chili is no longer part of the seasoning of a dish but has been considered as part of the staple food, of course there will always be chili in every dish. in other words: where there is food there must be chili and vice versa.

This is due to the location of the country of Bhutan which is at an altitude and is an area that has very cold temperatures, therefore the Bhutanese people really like spicy food to warm their bodies so that their bodies sweat which will help them deal with the cold weather.

5. Countries that allow women to have more than one husband :

Bhutan has a culture that legalizes a woman having more than one husband and legalizes polygamy and polyandry in a marriage relationship where a man and a woman are allowed to have more than one partner.

According to the marriage regulations made in Bhutan in 1980, polygamy or polyandry may be carried out with the consent of a new woman who will be married, it is also stated in the regulation that polyandry and polygamy couples do not get recognition from either civil law or Bhutanese customary law.

For women who practice polyandry they may marry several men but they are only allowed to have one legal husband. The tradition of plogamy and polyandry in Bhutan is usually carried out within the family, for example a woman will marry a man and then later this woman will marry  her husband's brothers and vice versa too where a man who will practice polygamy will marry all sisters from the wife.

Even so, slowly but surely the tradition began to fade and was abandoned by the Bhutanese peoples.
