Levante 2-3 Barcelona: Luuk De Jong Header Wins Penalty-filled Thriller

🦋Andre ter Stegen's penalty save turned the match on its head

Barcelona maintained their fine La Liga form with a remarkable win as they came from behind to beat a Levante side awarded three second-half penalties.

The game burst into life after the interval when Levante defender Son was fouled by Dani Alves, allowing Jose Luis Morales to convert from the spot.

Four minutes later the home side were handed a second penalty after Eric Garcia handballed, only for striker Roger to slam at Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

🦋Barca responded, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading in a superb Ousmane Dembele cross before two substitutes combined as Gavi teed up Pedri for a sweeping finish.

Ter Stegen's save had offered a springboard for Barca to turn the game but he faced a third penalty after Maxi Gomez was fouled by Clement Lenglet - who had been on the field for less than two minutes - and this time substitute Gonzalo Melero sent the keeper the wrong way to level.

Levante - seven points from safety - looked to have earned a deserved point but Luuk de Jong headed home Jordi Alba's cross in added time, making him the third substitute to score in an incredible second half.

🦋Luuk de Jong came on in the 84th minute and scored the winner in added time

Levante must somehow find a healthy points return in their last seven games to avoid the drop and they will wonder how they did not take something from a night where three penalties fell their way.

They had gone closest in a drab first half when Morales' superb solo run saw him denied by a combination of Ter Stegen and Garcia on the goal line.

They were far from at their best here but responded to adversity and - thanks largely to Ter Stegen's key penalty save at 1-0 - move second in La Liga, 12 points behind Real Madrid with a game in hand.

🦋 Barcelona Survives 3 Penalties To Claim Epic Victory Over Levante 🦋

Barcelona survived a close shave at struggling Levante on Sunday after giving away three penalties at a remarkable, end-to-end game that ended 3-2, courtesy of a last-gasp header by striker Luuk de Jong.

Barca is the first team in LaLiga to win a match after conceding three penalties and De Jong's extra-time goal saw it record a seventh consecutive league win, lifting them into second in the standings on 60 points after 30 games.

But it is still a long way behind leader Real Madrid, who has 72 points from 31 matches after beating Getafe 2-0 at home on Saturday. Levante are 19th on 22 points.

🦋Levante took a surprise but deserved lead against a lackluster Barca in the 52nd minute when captain Jose Luis Morales scored from the spot after a foul by Dani Alves.

Moments later the hosts earned a second penalty, for a handball by Eric Garcia, who had prevented Levante from taking the lead in the first half when he scrambled a shot from Morales off the line.

This time striker Roger Marti stepped up to take it and his effort was saved by Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The visitors quickly made Levante pay, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading home a cross from Ousmane Dembele in the 59th minute.

🦋Teenage midfielder Pedri then gave Barca the lead in the 63rd, thumping a first-time shot into the bottom corner after being teed up by 17-year-old Gavi, who had also been hauled on from the bench in the second half.

Levante then won a third penalty of the second half when Dani Gomez latched on to a through ball and was tripped by Barca defender Clement Lenglet. Gonzalo Melero assumed taking duties and made no mistake against Ter Stegen to level in the 83rd.

But there was time for one final twist in an enthralling encounter when substitute De Jong connected with a Jordi Alba cross and headed into the bottom corner in the second minute of added time.

"The fact we won while conceding three penalties shows we are very competitive and have a winning mentality," said Barca coach Xavi.

🦋"I was concerned about this game because Levante are a difficult side with great players and they have beaten sides like Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. We've earned three golden points that keep us in the fight."

But when pressed on whether Barca had a chance of catching runaway leaders Real, the coach added: "It's very difficult because Real Madrid seldom slip up. But if they drop a few points in the next two weeks we can start to believe a little more."

🦋 Levante - Barcelona Summary: Score, Goals, And Highlights, LaLiga 2021/22 🦋

- Luuk de Jong's last-ditch header wins thriller for Barcelona

- Barça return to second place in LaLiga with victory

- Morales fired Levante ahead from the penalty spot

- Roger missed second penalty for Levante moments after Morales opener

- Pedri put Barça ahead with fine strike after Aubameyang had levelled

- Melero equalised with Levante's third penalty of the match

🦋Peep peeep peeeep! That was some second half. Barcelona have won their sixth straight league game and moved back up to second in LaLiga, but for so much of that thrilling contest, it seemed Levante would surely come away with something to show for their efforts.

The Granotas remain seven points from safety, then, but based on that performance and their recent results, Alessio Lisci's men should not be written off just yet.

As for Luuk de Jong: oh, how people scoffed when he joined Barça (myself included). But that's yet another goal from him that has directly translated into points.

What a lovely goal. In the blink of an eye, Barcelona lead.

🦋It's the two substitutes who combine for it. Gavi cuts in from the right wing, leaves two men trailing in his wake, before laying the ball off to Pedri in shooting space on the edge of the box. Pedri caresses it past Cárdenas and into the far corner, and the scoreboard has been turned on its head.

Dembélé tries to cut inside Postigo and into space to pull the trigger from the edge of the box, but loses it and Levante clear.

Morales is down and in need of medical assistance after seemingly twanging a muscle somewhere as he sought to challenge Araújo for the ball. It initially looked like he had hurt himself in a collision with the Uruguayan, but replays show he hurt himself all on his own.

It seems like he will be able to play on, though.

🦋Crikey. Morales is so, so close to scoring an utter wonder goal. Think Kinkladze against Southampton. He collects the ball some 30 yards outside the Barcelona box, before sticking on the after burners, cutting inside Araújo and Alba, and bursting into the area.

With just Ter Stegen to beat, his shot is well directed towards the corner, but the German gets a hand to it, and García clears from underneath the posts before the ball can squirm over the line.

Araújo lifts a neat ball into Alves, who's just drifted into a pocket of space a couple of yards inside the Levante half. He brings it forward before trying to slip Aubameyang into the penalty box, but the striker is beaten to the ball, and was offside, anyway.

🦋Alves turned his ankle horribly in the process of making that pass, by the way. He's up now and trying to run it off, but he's limping very heavily.

One win in last five visits for Barcelona

While Levante have lost all 20 visits to the Camp Nou in their history, in recent years they’ve made the Ciutat de Valencia a ground that Barcelona don’t enjoy going to.

Indeed, Barça’s last five away games against Levante in all competitions have yielded one win and three defeats for the Catalans:

- Levante 3-3 Barcelona: May 2021, LaLiga

- Levante 3-1 Barcelona: November 2019, LaLiga

- Levante 2-1 Barcelona: January 2019, Copa del Rey

- Levante 0-5 Barcelona: December 2018, LaLiga

- Levante 5-4 Barcelona: May 2018, LaLiga

Vezo, Son and Campaña come in for Levante.

🦋As for Levante, head coach Alessio Lisci makes two changes to the side that beat Villarreal last weekend. Rúben Vezo, Son and José Compaña come in for Martín Cáceres, Enric Franquesa and Gonzalo Melero.

- Four changes for Barcelona :

Barcelona boss Xavi makes four changes to the team that began Thursday’s Europa League draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, as Dani Alves, Frenkie de Jong, Nico González and Ousmane Dembélé all return to the team.

The quartet who make way are Gerard Piqué, who was forced off against Eintracht with a hamstring problem, Gavi, Pedri and Adama Traoré.

- Levante vs Barcelona; welcome :

Hello there. Barcelona can move another step closer to assuring themselves of a top-four finish at the Ciutat de València tonight, as they take on a Levante side battling to beat the drop.

Xavi Hernández's men can also keep their fairly slim title hopes going if they beat the Granotas, but they're at a ground where they don't have a particularly good recent record.
